TEAM ELITE 8GB 2666MHz Laptop RAM Review
I bought this to upgrade my laptop from 8 to 16GB and it worked great. I picked this one because it was the cheapest LP-DDR4 2666 8GB I could find at the time. Installation was easy – just take the bottom of the laptop off, pop it in, and boot it up.
Another review mentioned that the RAM shows up as being clocked at half the advertised speed – this is not false advertising or a mistake but the way RAM works. DDR RAM transmits data *twice* per clock cycle (Dual Data Rate – the “DDR” in DDR4). When you see RAM sold as 2400, 2666, 3200, etc, MHz this is the “effective” clock rate. Whatever it is , the actual clock speed of the RAM will be half of that (regardless of manufacturer) for DDR RAM. Listing RAM speeds in MHz is wrong and potentially confusing (it should be MT/s) but I can’t take any points off for this since all the RAM manufacturers do it.
Keep in mind when buying RAM that if you mix two different speeds (e.g. 1 stick of DDR4 2400 and 1 stick of DDR4 2666) it will work but both will be run at the slower speed of the two. If you’re adding an extra stick of RAM, check what speed you have already before buying, and then buy that kind. Or, if you want faster RAM than what you already have, it’s best to replace all your RAM sticks.
I ordered these SO-DIMMs for my Mac mini (2018) —base model A1993 EMC3213, ID MacMini 8,1 with intel core i3 3.6mhz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. I made sure that the memory modules I searched for were PC4-21300 at 2666mhz because I had read that the DDR4 transfer rate was necessary for the mac mini. I also only wanted 16 gigabytes, but came across Teamgroup’s memory modules which are much less expensive than Crucial or any comparable memory I could find— and ended up ordering the 32GB (2x16GB) modules instead! I installed the ram and it has been running great for 2 months now, and no problems so far. The company seems legit —it is based in Taiwan—and their product has been great so far: also made in Taiwan with Micron chips, and they have a limited lifetime warranty on their memory modules. I am very pleased with this and will look out for their product line in the future when upgrading.
