The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X is the high-end desktop (HEDT) flagship of the Zen 5 "Shimada Peak" family. Released in July 2025, this 64-core, 128-thread monster is designed for extreme enthusiasts and professional creators who demand world-class multi-threaded performance but do not require the full enterprise manageability or 8-channel memory of the "PRO" WX-series.

The 9980X succeeds the 7980X, bringing the architectural refinements of Zen 5 to the workstation. While the core count remains at 64, the move to a 4nm process and improved IPC (Instructions Per Clock) provides a significant uplift in heavy-duty tasks like 8K video rendering and complex code compilation.
